There's no reason to take these myths any more seriously than lightning bolts coming from the hand of Zeus, which we also know to not occur in nature. If there's an omnipotent God that comes in and tampers with the laws of physics, he seems to have taken a vacation because I don't see the laws of physics being broken anywhere. If God does indeed intervene in the natural world, as you claim, then the universe does not operate predictably according to the laws of physics. And yet everywhere we go, everything we experience in our lives does operate predictably according to the laws of physics.

Is it really that much of a stretch to claim that there is no loving God interfering in our world? It's pretty plainly clear. Tragedies happen all the time, and no giant invisible hands come in and make things all right. Any loving God would have known exactly how to prevent 9/11 or the Holocaust, and would have the decency and basic respect to do so, yet they happened. Babies are born with birth defects, families starve, dictators reign, suicide bombers blow themselves up, and AIDS ravages Africa. This is the best that omnipotence and omniscience could come up with in 15 billion years? I find that a little hard to believe. The best miracles God could come up with were a virgin birth and a dude walking on water and healing a few sick people he happened to come across? The miracles were only amazing enough to convince a tiny fraction of a percent of humanity that he was the real deal by the time he died. I have a feeling an omnipotent, omniscient deity could do a better job of convincing people than that. I also have a feeling he wouldn't be so racist as to only provide a messiah to his chosen race.

    hey onieronaut,
modern physics still can't explain where our thoughts actually come from, or the method the brain uses to store memories.
before we are born we pick our life and then go live it. we know everything from time of birth and all the way to death. when we die we are just completing a script basically so why would big invisible hands interfere???

    Howdy sharpezor.

Be careful. Oneironaut might be an atheist and a bit of a dick when people talk spirituality, but he has his opinion, and he has every right to it. At least he's not killing people for not being an atheist.

    Power to the agnostics!

I just don't see any reliable way of obtaining information about the universe except by looking at it and using logic to draw conclusions. Faith (that is, believing in things with no evidence) is simply not a reliable way of obtaining the truth about things. The fact that you had to resort to petty name-calling only underlines your inability to give any reason why anybody should believe in Christianity.

You provide no corroborating evidence for your statements, and you can't really expect me to just take them at face value, can you? I'm a freaking atheist. Just saying God exists and I'm wrong, and the only reason you believe so is "faith" (i.e. no evidence or logic) is just not going to sway me. And neither is all this name-calling. You have only further confirmed my belief that Christianity breeds hatred and intolerance rather than peaceful conflict resolution.

Again, you provide no evidence or logic to uphold your statements. You just insult me and my beliefs with name-calling. You obviously haven't studied anarchist theory in the slightest, and you haven't thought through your ideas enough to come up with a rational argument, so you instead resort to a bunch of puerile insults as if that somehow invalidates my position. You haven't offered with a single coherent argument against atheism, nor in favor of Christianity. You've just attempted to make me look like a fool, while making yourself look like one in the process.

Just because science can't explain something doesn't mean that it's supernatural. By that logic, people 100 years ago were perfectly correct in saying that earthquakes come from God because the science of the time couldn't explain it. And before that, lightning also had supernatural causes, because the physics hadn't come to understand that either. And so forth. As modern sciences advances our knowledge of the universe, the gaps where the God explanation still works narrow. There is no reason to think this process won't continue.

The fact is, we're making huge advances into understanding how the brain works. It's still an extremely complicated organ, the product of hundreds of millions of years of natural selection, but we're getting there. The reason we don't yet understand these things is because the brain is a notoriously tough thing to observe in action, and it is suited to so many tasks that its complexity means it will probably take a long long time before it is fully understood. If you want to posit the existence of a supernatural soul of some sort, I would like to see some evidence of that. Until I do, I can only accept the overwhelming wealth of evidence we have that the brain is the seat of consciousness.

    1) You do not provide any corroborating evidence for this idea.
    2) If we choose our life before we're born, then there's no reason to feel sorry for the victims of the Holocaust or 9/11. After all, they picked that fate. In fact, there's no reason to feel sorry for anyone about anything. Compassion goes out the window. I can't imagine a loving God setting things up that way.

ok let me put it another way
do you think all your cells in your body dont have thier own conciousness????
sure they do and they perform needed tasks for themselves and other cells
    and they communicate
    where's thier brain????????
and if they have one then....
that means we all have a brain in our heads and billions and biliions of others throughout our bodys

loving god???? who's god??? I dont beleive in the one of the bible
did you ever read any Jane Roberts "Seth material" books???
she goes into trance and another entity who calls himself Seth takes over. He wrote a whole bunch of books on the nature of reality. The content in them was like quantum physics but even vastly beyond
he proved himself time and time again with controlled experiments
"guessing package contents and that type of stuff"
It is in his books where I learned the choosing your life stuff
Did you ever hear of Edgar Cayce?????
he helped diagnose thousands of sick people while under hypnosis
he was exactly correct in his diagnosises

I don't know where you get the idea science is an atheistic idea. Science was helped out greatly by many christian scientists who used the same method Oneironaut has discribed. Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, Boyle, Faraday and hundreds of others who all thougt in a simular way but involved God.

Every religion before any mainstream today was a way of explaining the unexplained, all are considered myths or fairy tails. sharpezor, what makes you think Christianity is any diffrent? I'm sure they all had faith in theirs as well and even killed over it, just like today.
