as far as hieght on an untopped plant...if you have hieght restrictions grow indica.
Veg 24/7 let it grow to about 1 1/2 to 2 feet or until the branches start to alternate. then flower on 12/12.
You're plants will double in size if growing indica...hybrids or sativa's can triple in size...but a mostly indica strain like Northern Lights or Afghani,Romulan.G-13 crosses would be Ideal because the G-13 keeps the plants to a very short finishing hieght(3 feet)
Go here click on Motarebel and check out "G-bolt" and all the other killer strains!

Do you hae 4 feet total including the space needed for the lights and such?

I ran into the same problem, although I had 5 feet to play with. I decided to bend the plant ala LST method. I chose Northern Lights for my strain for the same reasons you did.

This is a pic of my plant. It grew more like a bush than a tree and stayed pretty short.

i was told to have the light one foot above plants. i have a super spreader on the way, for under the light to not be as hot. maybe i need only 6 inches between plants and light.i havent tried it yet. lights are on the way. i have ordered 600w mh and hps.the mh is supposed to run on hps ballast

Mylar covering the soil or rockwoll stoppes moss from growing and reflects much needed light back to the bottom branches.

I'd put the light on one and everything else on another.(Extention cord)
