Anything we do that is not absolutely 100% necessary for survival is a want, not a need. A want is something we do because we enjoy it. ANYTHING, want or need, can be abused, thus becoming a drug, and used as a means to escape or hide from reality. People are addicted to alcohol, nicotine, marijuana (psychologically, not physcially), food, religion, exercise, careers, relationships, sex, leadership, etc. and EVERY HUMAN uses at least one thing as a drug. I would bet my life that there is no human being who does not have at least one want and uses that want to be happy. Its human nature to try and be happy. So I think that marijuana can be used to be happy, and thus escape reality, but as long as its not hurting the user's reality (they don't feel negative effects in school, work, relationships, etc.) then it is okay to have that escape and use it as often as possible.
