a sound card you would most likely buy after
it improves the quality of sound
i had an onboard sound card for like a year and a half (onboard=built into the motherboard)
then i got a 200$ sound card and wow what a difference
not saying your gonna spend that much
but there are some pretty decent sound cards for like 50$-100$
its kinda like buying an amp for your car
i need to get some new speakers actually and thats another way to upgrade sound

I usually build mine from scratch but you should be able to find a 1 or 2 or even 3Ghz processor within your price range. 500Mhz is like 4-6 year old technology so if you're looking at one of those it's an older machine that someone is trying to unload. Personally I have a preference for AMD Athlon processors but that's just me. However they do tend to be a little cheaper than Intel based machines. Also if you are looking for intel, stick with Pentium (pricier I know) as opposed to Celeron based machines. And buy as much memory as you can afford. Don't settle for less than 512Mg. And I agree that Dell makes great machines and has great service.
