Cloning

OK; I've got some really healthy females going and thinking of starting some clones from one of them.
I've seen it recommended that I use a cloning gel on the cut end and insert in rockwool cubes.
I only see rockwool cubes in connection with hydroponics but I'm growing in soil.
Can I start the clones with the gel in rockwool and then put the cubes into soil in pots once they are started?
