Sure you can cover just one branch and flower it to determine the sex. The foil I would be careful it does not retain heat because you could cook the leaves if you are not careful.

When you top the plant it will make the plant grow back bushier. Lower branches will develop quicker and have more flowers. Removing the terminal bud will alter the growth inhibiting hormones (auxins). This is why the side buds will grow quicker with even more foliage and give you even more buds of finished product. Not everyone has room to crop and grow big bushy plants or trees but itā??s worth the extra effort.

Sexing tip Hi all, All the advice I've seen so far (yes, I'm still a newbie so I'll no doubt get flamed that everyone has been doing this for years :) ) on sexing by covering a lower branch has recommended lightproof paper, tubes or a paper bag. Not having ready access to any of those I had to rethink. Am I the first to spot a new use for cooking foil (Bacofoil this side of the pond) here? A 12" x 12" piece moulds nicely around a lower branch without causing any damage and it stays in place on its Rating: 5
