[align=left]Hi Yanks and Canadians - I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.

The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent; Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.

Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not! (And criminals still possess their guns!)

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly.

Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. You won't see this on the American /Canadian evening news or hear your government or members of the State Assembly amd Ottawa parliament disseminating this information.

The Australian experience proves it.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding public.

Take note Americans and Canadians before it's too late!

Thanx for posting this article,it helps to highlight the fact-that criminals are criminals..because they don't obey the laws..it's a baffling fact,that gun-control advocates,refuse to acknowledge .

This is absolute nonsense. Itâ??s not just about criminals shooting law abiding citizens. Itâ??s about citizens shooting each other and themselves. Iâ??m in the UK where itâ??s virtually impossible to possess any sort of gun whatsoever. In recent years we have had between 150 and 250 firearms deaths per year. In the US you have had 30,000 to 35,000 a year over the same period. Does that give you any clue as to you why the Australian government wants to limit the private ownership of guns?

Plus I donâ??t know where Mr. Chenel is getting his statistics from as everything I can find says the exact opposite. Iâ??d guess heâ??s making them up. I wonâ??t quote the stuff I found here; thereâ??s shitloads of it. Give it a google.

A few random but dramatic statistics:

In 1996, handguns were used to murder 2 people in New Zealand, 15 in Japan, 30 in Great Britain, 106 in Canada and 9,390 in the United States.

In 1998, more than 10 children and teenagers, age 19 and under were killed with guns everyday in America.

From 1993 through 1997, an average of 1,409 children and teenagers took their own lives with guns each year in America.

Each year during 1993 through 1997, an average of 1,621 murderers who had not reached their 18th birthdays took someone's life with a gun in America.

You still haven't got the hang of this. A million dead since the sixties aren't able to say amen. Whatever theoretical benefit you get from the right to bear arms its massively out weighed by the real and absolutely not theoretical carnage it causes.

if you take guns away from law abiding citezens in america, the only people who have guns will be the criminals and the government. that is the last thing you want. most violent crimes commited in america were commited using illegal black market or stolen weapons anyway.
