No actually hashing has nothing to do with hash. It is a race where you run and drink beer. A lot of times everyone dresses up. But you can race anywhere. Through the city streets or through the woods.

Well you have the hares and hounds. The hares run ahead and make the course. It can be planned out or they can make it as they run. They need chalk to write arrows or directions on the street and noise making devices and horns if you are running in the woods to keep everyone on track. There are beer drinking stations all along the way. The whole thing is about following the trail and trying to catch the hares.
