Difference in looks?
I'm certainly not new to the pot world, and not that new to the growing world either, but I had a rather basic question.
A friend of mine grows, harvests, and dries for a few weeks. The end result looks much different than the dank bud that I buy. The homegrown is "looser" and less dense than nugs I get from my dealer. Is this a processing difference, a strain difference, etc...?

Sounds like your friend uses poor lighting, too smaller pots or just has some pretty unhealthy plants.

Genetics are a factor too. There are plenty of plants that produce fluffier buds while still being potent. In general, I think homegrown is considered to be the best bud because hobbyists love their plants. Dealers love money.

To get tight buds you need good lights, the more watts the tighter the bud. If growing outside it is harder to get tighter buds as you are not in as much control of the environment, my outdoor plants have pretty loose buds. I also heard that Sativa plants generaly have fluffier buds, wheras indicas have denser ones

my friend grew for the first time this year. it was outside and the buds came out beautiful. dense, yet fluffy and covered with trichomes and hairs.
most of the homegrown around here comes out shitty. its very light with very little calyxes and mainly leaves
