HISTORY OF 4:20!

I have this weed book and it says;

4:20 came from California high schools students during the Greatful Dead scene. It grew in popularity there and then moved through out the US and then on to being a national weed thing!!
I quess the would be in like the early 60's
Has anyone else heard something different?

I heard 4:20 originated in the early seventies at Dartmouth college, where kids would use "420" as a code name around their parents for smoking weed, and gather around 4:20 by a statue at their school.

420 originated when 420 years ago 420 people were gathering to light up 420 joints at exactly the same time, in a 420 person circle at exactly 420. And they ate 420 bags of doritos.
