The plants are top heavy although they have a good strong stalk.Should a stick be placed next to the growing buds and tied to the stick?Or is leaning okay?

tie them up you don't want them breaking off while you are not around. Can you tie them to the roof and just use garden string?

It's better to tie and not need it than to have a bud fall off before harvest.

You can see from the pictures, you just find a place to tie around the stock close to the top and then tie it to the roof.

No it will not hurt your plant. You do need to get the stick deap to hold it or you will run into the same problem.
