I guess I have a similar ranking just with a different flavor. Mine would go something like this.

Joint - when shared in a group, seems to always fail to satisfy fully. When smoked solo, it's a nice high but it always burns at the end. Damn near impossible for me to roll well with any thin papers. I'll resort to joints when I want to get one into a concert sometimes, or when I don't have my chillum and want to take a stroll somewhere.

Blunt - "the smoker's joint!", when smoked in a group, the effects are felt by all. and in fact doubled if hotboxing. when smoked alone results in a solid stoning. Better tasting than joints, and slower burning. Papers are easier to roll. Everything I said about joints is bullshit because to be honest, I don't think I've smoked a joint since I started rolling blunts. always have a few wraps on hand. But it remains special occasion sort of thing. A blunt occasion that is.

Hookah - delicious and exotic. Always fun. A great social setting, I've never smoked a hookah alone, and I'm not sure I'd want to, but being able to sit down with a group of friends and have a great conversation while listening to music and smoking from the hookah is a life experience everyone should have. for me, a social event. Another special occasion, because even in my group of friends its rare we come together to smoke the hookah more than twice a month.

Pipe/Chillum - I have a great glass chillum. It's one of the workhorses of my collection for sure. When smoked solo, it's a great high and it's easily repacked. When smoked in a circle will make it around at least twice and again, is easily repacked. Sure easier than rolling a joint. Easily concealed and carried. An adventuresome piece if you will, and I find that important.

Bubblers - Like bongs, only smaller and much more portable. Way more of a bitch to clean though. And precious few stand comfortably on their own two feet (two feet?). The quality bubbler is a prize indeed. Capable of satifying a group or a solo smoker. Repackable with all the ease of a pipe. I find Bubblers used in situations where a full sized bong would be awkward, and yet its enough of an event that it warrents serious smoking. Or for ease of use in the home.

Bong - The standard. That to which all others are compared. A good bong is like a friend. Or at least like a pet dog. Seems like by the time someone has a bong, they've started naming their pieces even if they didn't before. This is perfectly natural. Bongs do the job, regardless of the job. And do it well. The only weakness of the bong is that it's rarely portable. When bongs are thought of as highly portagable, they also seem to correspond with being fragile. If couchlock is your thing. You need a bong. Even if couchlock isn't your thing, you should probably still have a bong. When there's a bong in the house, barring some more intriguing option or "special occasion", it's usually the piece of choice while home.

Exotica:

Vaporizors - like bongs, and yet, not at all like bongs. Similar concentration, different "flavors" of thc almost. Potent, and perhaps a healtier option. Requires electrical outlets and so again, is a location-locked piece (anybody have an opinion on the VaporGenie by any chance?).

Gravity Bongs - Solo use. Good for feeling retarded. In a good way. If you enjoy being retarted that is. This has turned into a blue moon event for me. But I wouldn't rule it out.

Misc. (apples, carrots, coke bottles, etc) - It's nice to be able to feel like MacGuyver sometimes. When you and a friend have pot but have both forgotten a piece, and you can just be like "wait, I'll just take this can, and crush it a bit, and then poke some holes thusly and voila! a Steamroller!" But realistically, this is always an act of despiration. I don't keep cans lying around the house because I love the sensation of smoking misc. items.
