Instead of cutting them, I'd recommend tucking and tying them. I use pipe cleaners, which seem to be the easiest and they have the fuzzy coating that won't cut into the stems. That way, the fan leaves still do most of their job while light gets to the secondaries.
Just gently pull the fan leaves all to one side and tie them down. I used a wire across the bottom of the pot, but you can even anchor them to the main stem itself.
