Texas Voters Approve Ban on Gay Marriage

Texas Voters Approve Ban on Gay Marriage

    Nov 08 9:02 PM US/Eastern
    By DAVID CRARY

Texas voters Tuesday overwhelming approved a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, making their state the 19th to take that step. In Maine, however, a proposal to repeal a new gay-rights law was trailing in early returns.

The contest in Texas was decided quickly, the ban was receiving more than 74 percent of the votes in early returns. Like every other state except Massachusetts, Texas didn't permit same-sex marriages previously, but the constitutional amendment was touted as an extra guard against future court rulings.

The campaign had been enlivened over the past week because of a controversial tactic by the amendment's opponents, who argued in recorded phone calls to voters that the measure is so poorly worded that it could jeopardize traditional man-woman marriages. Amendment supporters denounced the effort as misleading.

Actually the amendment is very poorly worded. It basically says the state can enact no legal situation that bares any resemblance to marriage. Sounds great doesn't it? Sure! Until you start looking into things like power of attorney, child custody, etc... I don't see sweeping repercussions as a result of the careless wording but I absolutely see it being called into play in different-sex situations. Lawyers love wiggle room.

The loose wording is yet another attempt to further the Republican agenda at any cost and, as history dictates, will eventually come crashing down when the time is right. Gays are already married and continue marrying every single day. Let it go.

Oh yay, the bigotry of Christianity is being further forced on all of society by means of the state. What could be better?

Please, stay the fuck out of other people's lives if they're not harming anybody. What kind of hatred drives people to outlaw a form of love anyways? We need all the love we can get.

the government has no business legislating on this anyway...and that includes any marriage...it's not their job...you shouldn't need a license to begin with...

To be honest, when talking about gay marriage, I can never argue for it or against it because I'm not 100% about it.

What I mean is, if two people want to get married-- let them. Gay, straight, doesn't matter to me, but apparently it's more complicated than that. My question is what rights do homosexuals get when they get married that they shouldn't be getting?

(Please don't be biased. I'm not an extremist or even a Christian. I'd actually like to get under this particular issue because it's brought up all the time.)

Health care, retirement benifits, social security benifits, etc....

Who gives a rats ass if they want to get married but if the people of the state don't want their tax dollars supporting the effort....well, Texas voted.

Im from texas, so I think im obligated to make a defense of fellow texans. Yes, our oh so favorite president hails from this land (sarcasm), and we're full of bigots, raceists, baptists and all the other lower points of humanity. Yet, not all of us are bad, the city I live in drinks more beer than any other city in Texas (ive heard the whole country but im not sure), we're full of some of the worst racists and bigots around. However I know of over a hundred intellegent (straight and gay), athiest/agnostic/buddhist/etc..., and non-racist people personally. There are good people everywhere, texas isn't all that bad....bud's cheap as fuck. Yes this is a step backwards and shows us all that there is no land of tolerence or equality only hushed hatred and gradual acceptance. The former generations have had their time to reign and corrupt and depress societal growth, but with the coming generations homosexuals will find a world that we create to be more open and free, (at least thats what I hope). Texas will definately be the last of the states to accept homosexuality, and it's a sad thing.

BTW. This law violates the 7th amendment that forces other states to recognize the laws of other states. (At least to my understanding of the amendment)
