I used 2x4's for the construction... actually, they measured 1.5"x3.5". For the panels (doors, roof, walls, floor) I used 0.25" thick plywood. I thought it was going to be too thin, but it worked out fine.
After construction, I sealed all seams two times (left to dry for 2 days, then re-sealed) with wood silicone.
I painted the interior with white paint (a couple of hands of paint) and then I applied mylar to all surfaces. Mylar kicks ass!
I'm planning on growing 15 plants inside my cabinet. It measures 20" deep, by 40" long by 48" high. I'm growing the mother plants right now... I plan on cloning them for sex, then removing the males. Then, taking 15 clones from the females... then growing.
As to the buckets... I don't know how it'll work out for you. This is my first grow ever.
I'm doing a Hydro NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)... so my plants will fit pretty good in there... and I'm also doing a SCRoG. So that will help keep the height down. Syrrus said that if you bonsai a plant you'll affect bud... I don't know about that... I would think that smaller plants produce tighter and denser buds. Tall plants would produce long and lanky buds.
Anyways... I'd like to give you a few tips that would sure as hell would have helped me out shitloads...
I don't know about your lighting situation, but I've got a dual ballast and a 400W MH and a 600W HPS. In flowering I'll run both of them. I've got an air cooled reflector... the ones that have a glass at the bottom, so all the hot air of the bulbs doesn't mix with the grow room's air. I must tell you, these sealed reflectors kick ass!!! I've got a 50 CFM fart fan hooked up to mine, and I've got my plants less thant 4 inches away from the bulb...Needless to say, they're growing very, very happilly.
BUT... new plans... my reflector, I'm unable to fit inside my cabinet. I knew this before I ordered it... but my plans where to cut the reflector and bend two inches on each side... so it would be slimmer... then place it inside my cabinet.
But I've read some threads here about Cool Tubes... You use a Pyrex Bake-A-Round (eBay) and you place your bulbs and sockets inside the cool tube... then you hook-up 4" dryer duct hoses to the cool tube, and hang it inside your cabinet. I plan on doing exactly this. The cool tube will take much more less space than the reflector, PLUS I don't have to damage my perfectly new reflector in the process.
After I've got my cool tube, I'll build a 'wing' type of reflector made out of sheet metal... then I'll cover its bottom with mylar (I'm telling you, mylar kicks-ass!). I'll hook-up my 50 CFM fart fan to the cool tube, and that'll be that.
For cooling, I'm going to do passive air intakes at the bottom of the cabinet, and one 90 CFM 6" fart fan @ the top taking air out and pushing it through a carbon air scrubber (Overgrow.com has some pretty good FAQs on building them).
I'll also place a 50 CFM fart fan @ my window... so it takes fresh air... perfectly fresh air... then I'll duct that air near the passive air intakes at the bottom of the cabinet... Fresh air is super important!
I hope this helps. Please let us know what you plan on doing...
Best,
