According to police, the Melbourne group has been under surveillance, involving phone taps and secret listening devices, since July last year. Crown prosecutor Richard Maidment SC said discussions about firearms, bomb-making and obtaining chemicals were recorded.

"There was discussion about sourcing chemicals and identifying chemicals that were not easy to source since September 11 (2001)," he said.

They also purchased "massive quantities" of bomb-making equipment, including glassware, thermometers, Bunsen burners and beakers, while the Sydney branch of the unnamed group had been gathering chemicals similar to those used in the London Underground bombings, Mr Maidment told the court.
