cotton woven up with paper and whatever else they weave it up with gets printed with a $100 bill which is just cotton/paper, and is deemed nearly worthless too.
Diamonds are actually very plentiful. The people who own the mines only allow so much to be mined every year so they can control the market prices.

That cotton/wood fiber piece of paper only becomes money when the Federal Reserve people come over and says it is. Otherwise it's just a piece of paper...
