what you described is more of strain thing. long and thin is sativa and short and fat is indica

notanovice is right, you need to take clones and root them and then flower clones under 12/12 for 2 to 3 weeks or take your chances when you flower.

Good thing to remember when sexing is that males develope alot faster than females.. so if you have more than one plant and they're growing at different rates despite the fact they're the same age... one most likely will be male.

Males develope a full 2 weeks before females.

watch the preflowers. once alternating branching is underway the plant is technically sexually mature and will show preflowers at the base of the branches where the fan leaves come off...use a 10x magnifying glass and with practice you'll be able to sex most plants at 4-6 weeks without changing anything.
