ATTIC GROWROOM
Okay i just moved in a brand new house and they didnt put a hole in for the attic. Im wonderin how much would it cost to put a hole in my closet roof so that i can have a sqaure hole to get into my attic. Also, would i need a contractor to do it and how much would it cost. By the way im not lookin for anything fancy like those pull down stairs all im lookin for is a sqaure hole so that i can enter it.

Do you have a power saw?
Make sure you don't hit any wires ;-)

take a sawsall to it.
..depending on the spacing between the joists...if they are spaced 24" then you could cut a hole in your closet and build a wall ladder...if 16 " you would have to "box in", opening after you cut a section out of 1 or 2 ceiling joists; and brace-in around it provide rigidity.
In the hallway you would have to do the same thing to fit your drop-down stairs, and of course in the hallway you would want to trim it out...
You need carpentry skill, sawsall, and skillsaw, squares, nailing /fastening equipment, and assorted basic carpentry tools...If you have tools and gumption to take on a project like this, you could do it  ...maybe go to hopot and buy a remodeling book that addresses those type of stairs or anything where it shows cutting a wall or ceiling open and finishing it out, after you read it and see an explanation of how-to; You will know if you can tackle this job.
I rate this a medium skill level of carpentry...A contractor would probably charge upwards of $500 or so to come and do this.you can invest in some tools and have something to show for it afterward; and for less money...imho, lw :smokin:

thanks for the help but all im looking is for a simple square hole in my closet roof so that i can enter the attic. My old house had one in the closet roof so all you had to do was push up on this square piece of wood and you could get into the attic.

find the joists and mark where you want the hatch to go then you`l need to cut it out. in the attic you`ll need to put wooden straps across the two open sides of the hole where there is no joists place an inch back from the sides of your cut to allow flushing. use 3" by 3" for these straps . then attach 4 lengths of 2" by 1" around the hole for the hatch cover to rest on . measure the opening an cut out the piece for your cover , then face up round the hole with 3" skirting or whatever this should suffice. I`m no carpenter but I`ve spent my working life alongside them(i`m a decorator) but its a simple enough job just be aware of the obvious ,like live wires an fallin through the ceiling an shit...good luck
