Jimi started his early musical career as banjo player for Bill Monroe..... Monroe fired him after two weeks, because Jimi wouldn't cut his hair and wear a black suit and tie.The fuzz-wah pedal was also a factor in his termination.

Ridin' on the City of New Orleans
    Illinois Central, Monday mornin' rail
    15 cars & 15 restless riders
Three conductors, 25 sacks of mail ....
    - Arlo Guthrie

John Hartford sure was a good Banjo player. Saw him perform one night back in the seventies. He had some kind of tap shoes on his feet...and some kind of platform with an electric pick-up in it that sent the sound of the tap shoes through the amplifiers. Never heard anything like it before or since. And he tap-danced while playing that Banjo.
