It's been so long since I read the book. I think if you turned it off somebody came to your house or you couldn't turn it off because you just didn't have the desire to. It always made a humming sound.

you should read the book, unless you don't like reading

Orwell i think is the guy that wrote it. He also wrote ANIMAL FARM which is an excellent story about uprise, rebellion, and all that grandeur. Even though it's about animals taking over a farm, it's a metaphor for the minority overtaking the power.
