You have to tell yourself to be calm. It gets easier with practice. I've only had them occasionally (like once every couple months or so) before I really started getting into them. But then about a week and a half ago I got my hands on a copy of the book Lucid Dreaming by Stephen LaBerge. I read half the book on the first day, and had an awesome lucid dream that night. That's what made me really start researching them. I had two more in the couple nights after that, but they only lasted a few seconds before I woke up. Then I started keeping a journal of my dreams and doing regular checks throughout the day to see if I'm awake. Since I started doing that about a week ago, I've had four more. Maybe I'm just a natural. In any case, it's really fucking awesome.
