I've never cooked something that didn't have noticable effect. My personal theory on why most people don't feel it their first time or so when smoking is that it's usually because they simply don't know how to smoke it. I'm not saying there aren't people out there with high tolerences naturally, I've just witnessed many a beginner take one or two whispy puffs, cough, mutter something about "harsh" and then wonder why they didn't get high later on.
So you always avoid that with cooking. But that might seem like a big step to go to from not having any pot experience to eating a cookie/brownie... Cookies pack a much larger hit usually and you're sorta committed to it. I've seen people peak beyond their comfort zone and it's not a happy evening for them. I mention all this only because I have no idea what your situation is and these points might merit consideration...
