Timers?
Thanks, that does put some light on the subject. My only issue is that the my timer still works, I just think when it switches on that it's pumping too much power to the light & blowing it. I'll have to get a new timer one way or another now, but please keep the replies coming, as it might now be that - I'm just focusing on that area for the moment.

Be very careful using any timer, extension cord, or surge protector rated any less than 14 amps.I personally use the 15amp household timers from a hardware store, but I replace them yearly.Be very prudent in your electrical connections, fires are a very real concern.

You want a timer that can take 20 amps of power with out burning out or heating up. My self I use intermatic brand timers 220v and I can split the feed or not my choice. There old fashion but they can take way more amps then you are using.

you can look at Intermatic timers here, you can buy them at lowes menards home depo, I use this type for my large grow room, and a intermatic appliance timer for my small area.
I dont think your lights should "pop" have you tried pluging them directly into the outlet, you may have sometype of short..

Hi,
That all sounds good, and great advice. I've looked at the intermatic, but it seems a lot of bother for one plant. I've just bought a new heavy duty timer with a built in 30amp relay. I assume this should do it?
I've just had delivery of a new light today as well. Going on manual lights till the timer comes in the post.

always have safety in mind first, a fire, even a small amount of smoke could bring unwanted visitors to your grow. oh yes ..shocks too
I dropped a grow hood that i was raising up a few inches, when the hood fell,it jerked the ballast off the shelf and shocked the pee pee out of me, luckily the cord got pulled out while i was twiching around....

Shit thats scary! what can cause fires except for water spillings? I was watching a show called Underground Britain ... and they were growing medical marijunana for old people and such .. anyway a fire had occurred in one of their growrooms and they called the fire department and one of the fire men called the police when they saw the room but they were gonna fight back the police with all their old people backing them.
