kinda hard to explain....but think about it this way...picture some shitty 2 x 4 in your head, that's still really rough, and you can see alot of imperfections....might even be warped or bowed.... treated won't be that way...treated will probably be darker, be a hell of a lot more smooth, and there will be little or no imperfections in the wood. it's just kinda something you have to know....if they're brand new (or haven't been mesed with really) it should stil have a tag at one end stapled there about half the size of a credit card that would say whether it's treated or not....being able to tell the diffrence is kinda something you jus thave to know, i don't think there is any fail safe way to tell if it's treated or not....
