I would say that the $40 kit is a little excessive if you are just growing on a small scale (or if you don't have a lot of spores right now). The shaker kit looks like it would be great, I would buy one if it weren't on ebay. It just depends on how much you want to grow. Since it's your first grow, I would suggest buying the Shaker kit, it is less complex and should be easier to work with for a newbie.

Cubensis are the easiest. Don't waste your money on a kit, get the shit yourself. There's a lot of guides on shroomery.org. the PFtek method is teh ez.

The main thing when growing is just knowing when to harvest, when to cut aborts, sterilization, etc...it's easy...past that, it's just using different types of fertilizers and spores. The time for harvest is different, and all that....but there are guides to everything nowadays. Shroomery.org is your best bet for anything mushie related.
