Stephen Hawking's Public Lecture on "Life in the Universe" Life in the Universe In this talk, I would like to speculate a little, on the development of life in the universe, and in particular, the development of intelligent life. I shall take this to include the human race, even though much of its behaviour through out history, has been pretty stupid, and not calculated to aid the survival of the species. Two questions I shall discuss are, 'What is the probability of life existing else where in the universe?' and, 'How may life develop in the Rating: 5

Okay, i'm going to post seriously now.. Hehe

Stephen Hawking has one of, if not the, most brilliant minds on the planet. I mean, he can talk about a time period of billions of years and explain the progress of the entire universe over that time in just a paragraph or two. I'm not going to say I agree, or disagree, with everything he says, because he knows much more about these things that we do.. We can have opinions, but as far as knowledge of these subject goes, he beats us all.

Torog, refering to your comment about Stephen Hawking not allowing for the existence of God; I don't think that the currently accepted model of the universe (that is to say what we currently know about the universe) allows of the existence of God either. Logic would say that this means God oesn't exist; you can try and circumvent this with logic of your own, but it would most probably be flawed.

The Ghosttoker is right, very little place for that kind of "god" in a rational society. Once you externalize your deity someone gonna tell you they got it and you gotta pay for it. And we all remember when Bart sold his soul. So you gotta hold onto that holy feeling inside you, outside it is harsh reality again.

But the real deal you are asking is something we have been producing for quite a while, Teletransportation Devices. We first imported them from Thailand in 1975. Maybe it was 78?

"This has meant that no one person can be the master of more than a small corner of human knowledge. People have to specialise, in narrower and narrower fields. This is likely to be a major limitation in the future. We certainly can not continue, for long, with the exponential rate of growth of knowledge that we have had in the last three hundred years. An even greater limitation and danger for future generations, is that we still have the instincts, and in particular, the aggressive impulses, that we had in cave man days. Aggression, in the form of subjugating or killing other men, and taking their women and food, has had definite survival advantage, up to the present time. But now it could destroy the entire human race, and much of the rest of life on Earth. A nuclear war, is still the most immediate danger, but there are others, such as the release of a genetically engineered virus. Or the green house effect becoming unstable. "

if other life-forms do exist, this statement would be ruled out, because another species knowledge would then become available, and it would allow for the human race to keep on living, but living amongst another life. surely, if there is another life-form existing, their knowledge would not be the same as that of planet earths, right? very interesting read.

I think your statement is completely wrong, ganj. Don't get me wrong tho, youre a cool dude. Much respect and all...but..if we're forced into specialization due to so much available knowledge...then we would only be forced into further specialization if we had even more knowledge suddenly added. right? unless what you said was a joke?

What do you think of Intelligent Design theory ?

I'm of the opinion, that there are aliens amongst us now,and that there could be time travelers here,as well. I also think that there is a way to git around the speed of light limitation, not only through wormholes, but having the ability or capability,to make a wormhole through space-time continuum. If Hawking is discounting the spiritual plane, then he's ignoring a whole field of energy physics. It was recently proven, for instance,in the area of Quantum Mechanics, that one particle can act on another,at any distance, effecting a change in the other particle. The quantum affect, appears to operate outside of normal space-time continuum and the speed of light limit..I would be interested in Hawking's thoughts about that.

    Have a good one ....
I think I`d call this gif HELL. You? LOL Hope your well Torog!

In stillness... lies the answer... to re-direct awareness from the mind.. and let it simply be awareness.. STILLNESS...

.. simply NOW... take one step and experience stillness and see the WHOLE MIND!

there is only NOW..everything else YOU MADE UP... LOL

    i love you
