If you have clay do what garden said and dig a hole big enough for the roots... fill it with soil and put a cup of some blood meal... or ammonium nitrate at the very bottom. If you try to grow in just clay you plants will do bad. Clay particles are so small they pack together tightly and leave little room for water, air or roots. If you have woods get the dark top layer soil from there... If it has leaves make sure they are shredded they are a good soil conditioner and when they breakdown they are a source of nitrogen.
