Learn Dutch
Yeah, I'm hopefully going to Amsterdam sometime next year. I'm definitely going to take advantage of the fact that a lot of them speak English, but I'm also going to learn the essentials of Dutch, because I don't want to be THAT American visiting Europe, asking everybody if they speak English and where the nearest McDonald's is.
Just to point out a double standard, we Americans (especially those who belong to the "Speak English or Leave" school of thought) would consider it extremely rude if someone from, say, Bulgaria came to our country and expected everybody to speak his language. However, a lot of Americans depend on the rationale of "Well, there's got to be SOMEBODY who speaks English" in planning their trips overseas.
