Slides all the way! With a slide you don't get leftover smoke in the chamber, resulting in the first part of the next hit being stale. Slides are easier to clean, if your inner workings are all gunked up, the bong won't hit as hard. Speaking of which slides also clear the bong faster, saving you lungs strength for keeping that massive rip in. Also if you don't feel like hitting a bong and you have nothing else around, you can just hit the slide.

Glass all the way also, it's the most pristine of smoking surfaces. Sure it's more expensive (you can find glass bongs for about $35 and up, but the cheaper the smaller) and it runs the risk of getting broken, but it's all about quality. I like to taste what I'm smoking, not what I'm smoking out of.

Clearing out a carbed bong after every hit is a pain in the ass. Of course if everyone followed propper etiquete they would clear the leftovers of their hit before they passes it but we all know that isn't always the case.
A slide makes it easier to clear the chamber even if you are having to do it yourself after someone passes you the bong. Also the interchangability of the slides is a great plus. You could have one excellent bong with like four or five different slides for different occasions.
Carbs are OK but I prefer a slide.
