Try crushed ice with some ice-cold water... that should give you a cool effect.

I love that thing! Classy, portable, and effective.

I know it sounds weird, but try a few hits with hot or boiling water. It doesn't cool the smoke down, but you get steam and smoke at the same time-- it's really nice!

I've always found that crushed ice is the other good plan of action. Don't bother with any water; the first few hits will start the ice melting.
