That's just the thing; I think cannabis posed a seriously monopoly threat at that time. Think of all the materials, were it legal to possess, that could be made? Paper with no lost forests, an extremely cheap everlasting oil supply (gas would be next to NOTHING then), and what alaskangirl said too with the kerosene and whale blubber and such. I think that cannabis would have monopolized the country at a time in which there was much controversy over monopolization.
