Yeah around here I always watch the ditches. Normally if you see quite a few plants together it's shitty weed. If you spot one lone plant by itself it is often damned good. This is usually caused by a tossed out roach. I'd never go into the woods and rip somebody elses weed off. Good way to get your ass kicked. I might watch the patch and see if I could hook up with the person growing it and maybe score some from him.

A buddy of mine just told me a story at work today. He talked to a guy he knows not far from here that always grows a dozen or so plants every year. The guy told him that someone found his plants and ripped off 2 of them. He had been taking very good care of them and had them tied to staked with twist ties. Whoever ripped him off took the stakes and bread ties and made crosses out of them and then stuck them in the holes left by the plants. Needless to say, that pissed him off even more!!

I guess the plus side is that they didn't take all of the plants!
