Catch 22 by Joseph Heller will have you in fits of laughter (and confusion) right from the start.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to The Galaxy, A Trilogy in Five Parts by Douglas Adams, for the same reason.
The Shining by Stephen King will scare the crap out of you... as will most of his works.
The Dark Tower series, also by Stephen King,will keep you reading right to the last page of the seventh book.
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, though aimed at a younger audience than the others, is far easier to get stuck in to and is pure story all the way.
As you can see, I love to read.
