First grow... pics

Hey all! I finally did it. I built a grow box, got some clones, and now I am on my way to a small garden for myself and my wife. Here is a quick rundown of my setup. I got a 1x3x4' box. 3 fans: 2 high flow computer fans and 1 circulating air purifier fan. 3 plants in soil: 1 white widow, 1 sensi star, and 1 humboldt gold. I got the WW first so it is a bit bigger than the other two but I am going to start them all flowering at the same time. I got a 250 W HPS light along with 2 smaller compact floro's (for vegging). Here are some pics. I have had all three of them for about a week and the WW for about 2.5 weeks. What do you all think? Any advice/observations would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah... the WW had a bout with mites but I haven't seen any since I sprayed them down with this stuff called "Safer". Also... the humbolt gold had yellow along the perimeter of the bigger leaves since I got it but it doesn't seem to be doing much better. So here are the pics

nice set up. The plants in the 4th pic appear to have a magnesium deficiency.

A bit of advice?

You better get those lights within an inch of the top of the plants. Those CFL wont light a whole lot of anything....or get about 8 more of them.

Also, when you switch to flower, they are gonna run right up the HPS's ass.

You should start tieing them down right now.

They will triple in height when flowering and no computer fan is gonna let you get them close to that HPS.

Nice first setup effort but this will be doomed for failure if you do not plan for what I explained WILL happen.

Also, that HPS is mounted nice right next to that top....I hope you have some insulation between the light and the board.

Anyhow, nice effort just be prepared to work and rework your first grow or two..

Thanks for the advice hardon. I do have a piece of metal screwed into the board that the light is mounted on. I figured that would be enough to reflect the heat away from the wood. You think I should do something more?? I am not even using the HPS yet, wasn't planning on it until I start them in flower.

I just now lowered the CFL's to about 1/2 inch from the smaller plants... Maybe I should get a couple of those super big cfl's I saw at the hydro shop? 100 watt each I think. couldn't hurt.

Also I was planning on making a hurricane tube (I think that's what it's called). Basically a pyrex bake-a-round (which has allready been ordered from e-bay) to house the bulb. A computer fan blowing directly into one end of the bake-a-round and dryer vent tubing collecting the hot air from the other end and directing it to the exaust. There is a link to the plans on overgrow... I'll post it if I can find it again.

I am going to make a 1.5" mesh screen to help with training them flat. I just haven't got all the stuff to do it yet. The plants are still pretty flexible and I can still bend them down to the level that the screen will be at so I think as long as I get it done soon enough I shouldn't have any trouble.

Thank you so much for the advice, hardon... It is really appreciated. When I get the said improvements done I will post an update so you can critisize some more. Seriously, it is really appreciated, I want to make this grow a sucsess very badly so your advice and critisims are taken to heart.

Oh yea... thanks, chong, for the links about the mag deficiency. I knew there was somthing wrong with that little lady. I'll be heading to the garden shop promptly to get some medicine for her

Allright! I got some stuff done and the girls are looking really good. Got a "cool box" built around the light, I'll post pics of it. There is a glass panel to go along the bottom but I haven't put it on yet.

I am still using CF's on a 24 hour light cycle but I am thinking about putting it on 12/12 soon. I've posted some pics of the plants with red arrows pointing to all the growth tips. Let me know what y'all think. Should I start flowering? Let them get a bit bigger? I don't want them to outgrow the box but I want it filled as much as possible too. Any comments would be appreciated.

12/12 sounds good.. They will at least douple in heighth.. and that looks like it could fill your box to the top!!
