Well, I think the best solution is to MANDATE your dentist give you Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas). As my doc knows I'm a reg toker, she increases it a bit to compensate as I'm a bit jaded... Anyway, with the right levels you will fell no anxiety. The pain itself can be remedied with novocaine, etc. but I'd hold off on the weed and DEMAND you get the GAS. Just my two Bahts worth....

I say you should smoke.. I would as i have never seen gas used over here, unless you get major stuff, they are mainly injections in your gums here (never had one luckily!)
My mum says the most painful thing she has ever had done at the dentist is when she was younger and had to have an injection in the roof of her mouth *shiver*

I have had unbelievable dental problems my whole life, mostly due to having celiac disease - which I did not find out I had until this year. The worst pain I experienced was once, about 30 years ago, when a tooth's nerve died. I could not get to a dentist that day, so I drank a pint of Jack Daniels straight down which helped somewhat. Having a dead nerve sucks. Instead of being sensitive to cold, it's extremely sensitive to heat. If this happens, then you KNOW you've got a serious problem.
On another happy note:
I read a story, years ago about a dental patient getting the shot of Novocain in the back of the mouth. The dentist missed the mark by a little, and injected the Novocain into the base of the patient's brain. The person went into a coma and died shortly thereafter. This is a good anecdote to tell people that are nervous about going to the dentist, lol.

I don't believe that brain story.
Anyway, OF COURSE you should toke before going. First, you know the dentist has had hundreds of patients come in blazed as fuck. He might not approve, but he's gotta be used to it. Secondly, even if it doesn't help the pain, at least it'll make staring up your dentist's nose a lot more interesting.

weed and pain....?
well i've never toked up before going to the dentist, I have after going. I had my upper wisdom tooth pulled once and it hurt like a sonofabitch. When it was pulled, it opened up a hole into my sinuses. the dentist told me not to smoke for however many hours, but when I got home I was hurting. Well, I packed the bowl and went to hit it, but all I got was a whistle. I couldn't get any suction going. The hole was sucking air through my nose whenever I tried to suck in. I ended up having to plug my nose and hit the pipe that way. It sucked but once I had a few hits, I didn't care.
I was gone for a while and now I\'m back.
