Thats an interesting question. I think we should look to our cousins the apes and chimpanzees for answers. Even chimpanzees are known to rape other chimps, and gangs of chimps have also been known to murder and harass other animals for no reason other than pleasure, or perhaps as a show of strength or to establish superiority in the group.

Do I think violence is programmed into our genes? I think somewhat. Violence is also, in a sense, a learned skill. I think it will be especially hard to overcome our animal-like instincts. We have to figure out exactly when our human ancestors began killing other humans.
