The first time I ever heard the word used extensively was in the term "dude ranch", many years ago.

In the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence" (1962), Lee Marvin, as the Western outlaw Valence, uses "dudeā? as a put-down of Jimmy Stewart, who is from the East:

Jimmy Stewart: "What kind of men are you??"
Lee Marvin: "This kind, dude."
Valence hits him
Marvin: "Now, what kind of man are you, dude?"

I saw this movie when it came out. If I remember correctly, we saw it in a drive-in. It's on TV once in a while, and John Wayne is also in it.

"Dude" stated being used in New York in the late 60's in a similar meaning as the usage by the California surfers who adapted the word. Now it can refer to women, also.

I have never yet heard the word used in any references that you have named. I guess it depends on where you live.
Breukelen advocaat Reviewed by Breukelen advocaat on . Why do so many ppl assume I'm a dude? Almost every time someone responds to something I say, positive or negative, they assume I'm a man. I don't know if my username is manly or something, but just so y'all know... I'm a girl :) . Oh yeah, and also, I think I'm comfortable enough here to be on a first name basis with people. So, my name's Sarah. Rating: 5
