growing newbie

I want to start growing, and havent had success in the past. I have no interior rooms so grow lites are out. My bathroom gets great light though and its private, its a large master bath, and there is great counter space in front of the windows.
Ive germinated seeds in paper towels before and that goes fine. My problem is "whats next". Where, when, and why do I remove leaves. In the past, my results have been very tall stalks with leaf. My brother has grown some beautiful shrubs, but he's in Italy and I'm here.
Also, I want to use seeds from a bag of good smoke. Im only likely to get 1/2 dozen seeds if I'm lucky. They're big fat seeds, is there anything in particular to look for in finding "good" seeds? Is there a specific soil that will give better results than others, and is plant food recomended? If so what kind and strength?
My house plants are awesome, so I dont have a completely dead thumb, just a bit brown where mj is concerned.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

You shouldn't need to remove leaves unless you plant to top or trim after bending.

Put your seeds between your fingers and push down on them. Bad seeds will crush.

The plants wont need food for the first several weeks.

You still have lots of time to read up and figure things out. Look through threads on this site. No better way to learn than through other peoples mistakes and tips.

3 gallon pot - $ 3.00
dirt - $10.00
perlite (white spomgy rocks) - you can get a big bag at Homedepot for 3.50
supplemental fluorescent light - $10

OK ready..

1.Take your 3 gallon pot.. put a piece of newspaper at the bottom to cover the holes.
you want water to drain but not the medium.

2. fill the bottom .5 - 1 inch of pot with perlite

3. mix perlite with soil (purchase good expensive soil) 20% perlite/ 80% soil mixture

4. pour your mixture into the 3 gallon pot.. leave 1 inch of room at top of pot

5. put your seed/seedling in the dirt.

6. Water dirt thouroughly - about a gallon of water (ideally you will set the ph of the water. PH kit can be purchased at hydroponic store for $15).

7. keep seed or seedling moist using 1 ounce or less of water per day.

8. after plant has rooted well, 7-10 days.. only water when top 3inches of dirt are bone dry... water using 1 gallon of water...

9. Hang a simple fluorescent light over your plant at night. You want to make sure your plant gets at least 18 hours of light (this is very very important). Your bathroom probably only gets ligh 10 hours a day at most in the winter.. this is not enough.

OK go do this stuff and then come back with some picture

It's all about the light, lady. As GK says, you need 18 to 24 hours of light for the first stage of their lives, which is called the vegitative state. The "veg" stage lasts about 60 days. At that point, you'll switch them to 12 hours of light, which will force them into a flowering state.

The light is the key to growing and how much money and effort you put into lights directly effects yield and quality.

Most people use compact fluorescent lights (CFL's), which are available at every hardware store and very inexpensive, for the veg stage.

Then, if you want quality bud, you'll need to spend at least $80 to $120 for an HPS or MH light to take your plants through their flowering stage.

Fuck. This is simple. I'm in too. Any tips on how to reduce the smell? My roommate would flip if she knew I was going to be growing and I think the smell is the only thing I would have to worry about.

does she know you smoke weed? if so, blame it on that...
Always blame beighborhood skunks.. his works for awhile...

and finaly, you could build a small carbon filter for your room.. "air scrubber"..
