About the small hole on the side of the bowl, we call that a "shotgun" hole here. What you do is, when sparking up a bowl, cover up that hole with your thumb, spark the bowl, inhale, then while inhaling and burning the bowl, take your thumb off of the hole and all of the smoke that fills in the pipe, rushes into your lungs and hits you hard.
