Low self esteem will cause people to brag and exaggerate their power, influence, stature, or reputation in order to impress you. Sometimes it is really obvious, sometimes it is an outright lie, but sometimes, when they do it just right, it works. I think everyone does it to some extent, however when they brag about something that clearly isn't true that tends to have the opposite effect on audience and make them look like assholes. I feel kind of sorry because they can't tell the truth and impress you so they tell a lie and distance you.
