Does anyone know when or why cannabis became illegal in the USA corporate jurisdiction? Or who had the first anti drug law?
I watched a movie about this a few weeks ago.... From what I remember, weed was criminalized to harass mexican laborers in the southwest in the early 20th century. The mexicans liked to smoke after a long day of work. A big newspaper article was written about one mexican going crazy after he blazed some and allegedly killed a lady. People in the area got pissed off and passed a local law against it. Misinformation about the "dangers" of weed spread throughout the country and eventually the treasury department made Harry Anslinger the first drug czar to control the cannabis problem, along with other illicit drugs. Long story short, this guy ended up spending his entire career, which spanned about fifty years, trying to put a stop to weed. Unfortunately for us, he was damn successful at pushing anti-drug legislation through congress. He even ended up addressing the UN about the marijuana problem, which prompted many other countries to outlaw the fine herb. Basically, this dude is responsible for anti-drug policy in the US, and to some extent the world.
