all a rolling mat is for is to rest the joint, and whatever smoking equipment you need..
but a rolling machine which is what you probaly meant, well some people use them, and i suppose they're easier then rolling a joint or there wouldnt be much point.. but rolling normally is so easy and fun whats the point

my mates used to use rolling mats all the time....i personally prefere freehand joints because somthimes they would roll it too tight which they said wasnt their fault...but mats are generally easier to roll with although its hard to get a cone shaped joint with it....try it....practice with it and see which you prefere.

I used to roll free hand but now I use a matt. They're easy to cone if you fold the paper at an angle before you roll it, they're also good as they protect the joint abit if your rolling outside. And people rolling to tight joints are just inexperienced like free handers rollling loose joints. They only problem is that you can become reliant on a matt and and not be able to roll a joint with out the aid of one.
