Supreme Court Chief Justice Rehnquist has died
You know what I loved about the conformation hearing? I loved hearing one of the democratic senators telling Roberts how he hopes that Roberts will expand freedom in America. While most everyone else Repubs and Dems alike keep talking about how they don't want someone who will legislate from the bench.(in other words an activist judge) When will people get it though their skulls that Roberts job is to ensure that our constitutional rights are upheld? I just wish Roberts had corrected that senatorā??s misconception as to the real function of the supreme court but perhaps he was just cutting the senator some slack. After all the same senator had just finished explaining how justices during the civil rights movement granted freedom to people that had it not though, in reality those people, by law, already had those freedoms.(unlike Roe vs Wade for example) Still I think he should have reminded the senator of how inappropriate it would be for him to assume the honorable responsibilities of the senate by expanding freedom in America.
