    attic sewer vent for smell?

    Hi ,
I am planing on building a cabinet up in my attic. There is a 3 inch PVC vent stack up there that goes right up to the roof. My plan was to "T" into that and blow my exhaust out.
What do you guys think. What about when it rains? where does the rain water go?
    Thanks any input.

That is an air vent for a bathroom I'm guessing. Try a "Y" with the out pointing up and you will not need to worry about water or anything getting into the line you are installing.

    attic sewer vent for smell?

    thanks,
Yea, up in my attic there is a large 3 inch pvc pipe that goes up out the roof, its the vent stack for the sewer/plumbing in the house?
there are several smaller pvc pipes that join into it. I am assuming that I can join into that and vent right up to the roof away from any neighbors?
I will be blowing air out it so would I get bad shit smell backup ?

You can tap into any of those pipes.

Each pipe is generally contstructed with a "P TRAP" below the toilets. This "P TRAP" fills with water and the water acts as a barrier to smell.

This is why whenever you smell sewer in a hotel or house, it is from a shower vent or sink vent that has not been used in a while and the "P TRAP" has dried up, thus allowing sewer gas to fill the area.

The only thing you want to make sure of....is the fan is indeed blowing air UP.......not down.

Ideally, buy the same dimeter pipe in the "Y FORMATION."

Cut out the proper height of existing pipe and, like Zandor sad, insert Y FORMATION UPSIDE DOWN, so the air is blow UP the piping.

Make sure it is the proper vent pipe you cut into. Some bathroom fans will exhaust into those as well, and if it is indeed a bathroom exhuast fan pipe, you will want to run that fan full time, otherwise the smell COULD backfire into a bathroom, especially when the outside air is hotter than the exhaust air.

But, most home builders these days build the bathroom fans so they just blow into the attic.

    attic sewer vent for smell?

    Hi Hard On,
Thanks for that info. The pvc where I want to tap into is horizontal, when it goes verticle its too out of the way, so I should be able to do what you are saying with a Y connector just position it so the flow is toward the exit , right?
Here is a picture of what I am thinking, should it work?
Rain shouldnt be a problem, because its going up?
Thanks, let me know what you all think. I am going to start the project this weekend.

    Yes your diagram is perfect.

    Couple of things...

Make sure your exhaust fan has a very high static pressure level. An inline fan wont cut it! It needs to be hgih static pressue.

Also, make damn sure thats a vent pipe and not something the builders ran electrical conduit thru.

Water isnt an issue as most of those pipes are capped at the top. If not, if you have a strong fan, air out will cause the rain drops to bounce off the top of the opening.

Your fan MUST be strong enuff to push thru all this pipe....either a vortex or squirrel fan would work best.

    attic sewer vent for smell?

good point, thanks again, this is a step learning curve. I was going to use some computer fans, but now I understand why they would NOT do the job.
So I plan to build a cabinet aprox 31x24x31.
Which one of these or could you recomend one. Here is one on ebay for $10

    http://cgi.ebay.com/120-VAC-SQUIRREL...QQcmdZViewItem
its 1.4 amps at 115 volts, thats over 150 watts? dont know about the cfm, actually that whole thing is confusing.

But this one is really nice $54

My friend, those are total peeces of shit.

    I QUOTE:

"This fan moves up to 100 Cubic Feet of air in less than two minutes."

    I TRANSLATE:

"This fan is a peece of shit."

    LOL...

sorry bro but you are in need of a high static pressure fan...

That means the more resistance, or distance the air must travel, the fan maintains the same RPM's.

I am afraid if you really want to do the job, you will need some more serious fan power.

Here is the one I bought when I got tires of fucking around with shitty rat assed fans for extraction....

    http://discounthydro.com/ventilation.asp#vortex

    Not cheap.

If you scroll down you will see the in line duct fans....

It all depends on how far you need to push the air. If you have a short length, maybe two inlines will work. But buy them at the Home Depot, they are 10.00 cheaper.

Or email me and i will see you my inlines i dont use.. $10.00 each.

    I have 4 6" inlines and one 8" inline.

    Hard On,
Dude , you are killing me!!
LOL. Hey, I just want to get something going and learn, then go back and upgrade. I really need to get the vent problem resolved not only for the plants but for my own paranoia. I cant finish my cabinet design till I know how big the fan is, by the way those blowers look pretty big for my 31 x 31 x 24 box ? but I guess I will need it to push the air all that way out the tube. What about noise do you know how quite that
Dayton 265 CFM Ventilation Fan/Blower is ? aprox.
