The difference between techno, trance, DnB, house, PH, etc. is like comparing rock to heavy metal, to jazz etc. sort of. It differs in rhythm and style.

what about techno that's less bouncy and dance-club like? more serious stuff?

the only example I can think of is the last 40 seconds of the In Flames song "My Sweet Shadow". very mellow yet really really cool feeling, gets you lost in it during a high.
