Anyways, a lot of people complain about that typical "hay" smell it produces after drying. That is completly normal. To get rid of that smell, and green taste, you have to cure it. You can decide how long, but I usually cure for about 7-10days, and the smell changes from hay to a nice floral, fruity smell. A cure will take care of that hay smell.

If your joint isn't burning and it is going out, that means the buds are not dry enough yet. Finish drying your buds properly, patience is key. Wait until your buds are crisp to the touch before smoking, or putting in the curing jar. Your buds must be dry before putting into jars, or mold will form, which makes the buds unsmokeable.

Oh ya, and the 24-48hrs of darkness isn't needed. Some people choose to do it, some don't. It won't lower potency that much so don't worry about it. Your friend who's been smoking for 40 yrs needs to realize things have changed since then, for the better.
