carvin a pipe
well i'm carving a wooden pipe out of a 2X4 block and i'm wondering if i'm supposed to do anything to the wood to keep it from catching flame or creating unwanted fumes.

You need a good hardwood . Softwood wont last and youll be inhaling some wood smoke each time. Get some wood from a craft or hobby store rather than a hardware store.
Chances are its been treated.
I like oak. If youve never carved I suggest practicing on some basswood or something similarly soft till you get it down. You dont want your beauty lookin like a rough draft eh.HE WHO HAS DESERVED TO DRINK FROM THE OCEAN OF LIFE DESERVES TO FILL HIS CUP FROM YOUR LITTLE STREAM

How does one carve a pipe without a dremel tool? How about cherry or maple for a wood?

I carve pipes all the time......I have about 22 pipes of my own creation, and thats not counting the ones I have given away. I like to use Black Walnut, its hard to come by and is very expensive. Its very worth it in the long run, its very very hard and wont burn through, and its also a nice looking grain with a dark brown natural tint. Luckily, I have two huge Black Walnut trees in my yard, and I can make many pipes out of just one limb. If you have to buy the wood though, be ready to dig in your pocket!! Good luck!-emtpockets

I have a dremmel but I like to do it by hand usually. I carve a lot. I usually use the dremmel when my hand cramps and I dont want to stop.
A few nice sets of carving knives, chissels, chip carving tools and some improvised tools here and there and lots of patience.
Im a big soapstone carver too. If you get a good solid piece with no veins you can make yourself a beauty in no time. Intricate detail is easy too. When youre done give it a hard coat to wear and a good metal bowl and have a pipe to turn your friends heads.
Shit I should start custom makin stone pipes for you guys. And emtpockets can do the walnut. "Stone-Nut" stoner pipes.HE WHO HAS DESERVED TO DRINK FROM THE OCEAN OF LIFE DESERVES TO FILL HIS CUP FROM YOUR LITTLE STREAM
