    Hurricane Katrina

Wow, there is a lot of devastation. This thing wasn't even as powerful as expected at landfall. Imagine had it been a cat. 5 at landfall? It would've been catastrophic. I truly feel sorry for the millions of people strongly effected by this monsterous storm. Usually such strong storms are tight and compacted, like Andrew (cat. 4 at landfall), but Katrina was a monster of a hurricane, absolutely huge, and to top it off, a cat. 4 at landfall. Someone made a comment about mardi gras, "One hell of a mardi gras next year", i'm not so sure there's gonna be a mardi gras this year.

Ms420, hope you are ok, it was bigger and badder than Camille in 1969, good luck. Everybody need to donate to Red Cross, they need the money!! New Orleans is in bad shape.

Camille was a cat. 5 at landfall. Katrina was probably bigger, but it wasn't badder. Camille was one of only two category 5 hurricanes to strike the US. The other was the 1935 labor day hurricane which killed hundreds of WW1 vets building a memorial bridge. It's a pretty awful story. If anyone of you are interested in hurricanes, I suggest 3 books that i've read. "Isaac's storm" about the 1900 hurricane that struck Galveston which was virtually without warning. "the perfect storm"...you all know that story....and "Storm of the century: The labor day hurricane of 1935." They said Andrew was a cat. 5 at landfall, but i'm about 90% sure it wsn't.

as some of you can tell, hurricanes are my main interest in life. That and cannabis

Storm categories actually have nothing to do with their size. Meteorologists use what is called the saffir-simpson scale. similar to the fujita scale for tornadoes. However, a hurricane's category lies in it's wind speed.

    Cat. 1 - 74-95 mph winds
    Cat. 2 - 96-110 mph winds
    Cat. 3 - 111-130 mph winds
    cat. 4 - 131-155 mph winds
    cat. 5 - 155+ mph winds

Storms aren't classified as hurricanes until they reach or exceed 74 mph sustained winds. Hurricane Katrina was absolutely massive. With winds gusts exceeding 200 mhp, look out!
