But that doesn't protect anyone. I mean, killers and rapists need to be dealt with somehow to prevent it from happening again, but once the police show up the deed has already been done. If their motivation was crime prevention and not revenge, they would be fighting unemployment and poverty, the chief predictors of violent crime. Or perhaps rehabilitating the killers and rapists they do find, instead of sending them to prisons, where they learn the ways of crime and violence from other criminals, and where they are demoralized, unloved, and abused before being released back into society to make room for more non-violent drug users.

Besides being completely ineffective at combating violent crime, they waste tons of time and taxpower money punishing "crimes" which don't hurt anybody, like drug use and prostitution. We need to abolish the government-controlled police system and replace it with autonomous, community-based organizations (sort of like the volunteer fire department), which target only violent criminals and focus on demolishing the socio-economic conditions which create crime rather than just going after people driven to violent crime by those conditions.
